Musica Sacra's presentations for Good Friday have become an established part of Auckland's musical scene, so much so that in recent years two performances have become necessary. This year we present Rutter's Requiem in its chamber orchestra version: it will be a serene, contemplative and moving experience. John Sanders was the revered Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, and his superb setting of The Reproaches is his finest composition, masterfully blending the structure and anguished dissonances of Allegri's Miserere with his own contemporary idiom.
Sunday 13 November
CONCERT: MUSIC FROM MADRID AND TOLEDO
Victoria: Missa pro Victoria
Morales: Emendemus in melius; Missa Mille Regretz
with solos for Dulcian and Harpsichord
Guest soloist: Ben Hoadley
5:00pm
St Michael's, Beatrice Road, Remuera

Inspired by his recent visit to Toledo, Spain, conductor Indra Hughes has put together a programme of glorious Spanish Renaissance music by Christóbal de Morales (c.1500-1553), who worked at Toledo Cathedral, and Tomàs Luis de Victoria, the 400th anniversary of whose death we commemorate in 2011.
For this concert we shall be joined by Ben Hoadley, the superb exponent of the Dulcian (the Renaissance forerunner of the bassoon). Following the Spanish Renaissance practice, Ben will double the choir basses on the Dulcian; and he will also play some Spanish Renaissance solos accompanied on the harpsichord by Indra Hughes.

The admission price of $40 includes a glass of wine from our sponsor Crossroads Winery and tapas.

CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR
In association with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
7:30pm
Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall

with John Wells, City Organist and Musica Sacra organist
Nicholas Forbes, Musica Sacra Organ Scholar
and
APO Brass and Percussion

a feast of thrilling Christmas music
for choir, audience, brass
and the new Town Hall Organ
After the success of last year's Christmas Spectacular, we are delighted to be able to return to the Town Hall for this exciting event, which brings together one of New Zealand’s finest choirs with the splendour of
the APO Brass and the Organ.
The main work will be John Rutter's thrilling and exhilarating setting of the Gloria. The whole programme will appeal to a wide audience and will include favourite Christmas Carols, including opportunities for the audience to join in the singing. City Organist Dr John Wells and young organ student Nicholas Forbes will offer exciting organ solos
and Musica Sacra will sing beautiful and inspiring Christmas music.
This promises to be the year’s
most sonically spectacular musical event!
Tickets will be on sale through THE EDGE from 1 October.
Choral Evensong
The choir sings Choral Evensong at 5:00pm on the last Sunday of each month (February to November inclusive but, in 2011, not in March or April). These services take place at the beautiful church of St Matthew-in-the-City in central Auckland. The services follow the 1662 Book of Common Prayer: they are short, fully choral with music from the Anglican Cathedral tradition, and there is no sermon. The Officiants are the Venerable Howard Leigh and the Reverend Jonathan Kirkpatrick. Free parking on Sundays is available in the church parking building immediately adjacent to the church, on the south side of the building (NB not on the forecourt).
Evensongs in 2011:
Feb 27; May 29; Jun 26; Jul 31; Aug 28; Sep 25; October 30; Nov 27
