Closure of Southern Motorway: travel suggestions for Musica Sacra's concert on Sunday 5 September 2010
You may have heard that trains are free on Sunday: the new Newmarket station is only about 5 minutes' walk from St Michael's. Extra trains with additional carriages are scheduled: you can read more about this here, and a special timetable for Sunday can be seen here.
If you are driving, here are some suggestions; although we advise you to allow extra time, we are sure that you can make your way to St Michael's without undue stress. Perhaps you could have afternoon tea in Mission Bay or Remuera. You may have friends or family in the eastern or central suburbs who you can visit before the concert so that you are already close to St Michael’s.
The southbound lanes of the motorway at Newmarket will be closed on Sunday. The motorway heading north will be open as usual. Traffic is expected to be heavy and slow on the streets leading through the city, particularly around the Newmarket area.
If you are coming from the north over the harbour bridge, we suggest you exit at Fanshawe Street and travel along Quay Street to the Strand, Parnell and then up Gladstone Rd, down Brighton Rd and along Shore Rd; then up Arney Rd or Portland Rd and along Remuera Rd to Beatrice Ave. Or travel along the waterfront to Ngapipi Rd and then up Orakei Rd to Remuera Road and along to Beatrice Ave.
From Pakuranga and Howick you can travel through Panmure, Lunn Ave and up to the Meadowbank area and Remuera Rd.
If you are coming from the south, there might be little delay. You can exit at Ellerslie and drive through the town, travel up Ladies Mile to Remuera Rd and then west to Beatrice Ave.
If you are coming from the west we suggest that you travel on the western motorway route and then to Remuera by Pah Rd and Market Rd or along Mt Albert Rd, Campbell Rd, through Ellerslie or Greenlane and up Greenlane East Rd to Remuera Rd.
